This quote popped up on the Quote of the Day rss on my Google homepage:
Silly things do cease to be silly if they are done by sensible people in an impudent way.
—Jane Austen
Well. That explains snarky hipsters, most of postmodern ironic culture, performance art, The Cremaster Cycle, Odd Nerdrum, garden gnome abductions, and about 50% of modern life.

I've been saying for a while that's there's a bus leaving in ten minutes, and I want to see irony on it, but clearly snarky hipsters been around since Jane Austen, and it's unlikely irony's going anywhere, anytime soon. But seriously, irony, at least get off my damned lawn, or I'm calling the cops.

Anyway, smart lady, Jane Austen. I should read more of her. All I've really read is Northanger Abbey, which is nice send-up of overwrought Gothic emo crap (speaking of irony), but not your typical Austen. I may have avoided Austen for fear of catching the twee. Maybe I can get a shot or something for it.
