Everywhere I go on the net, that story of the employee trampled at a shoppers' stampede at a Long Island Wal-Mart keeps popping up.

It's the perfect story. Whatever you're for, or against, you can prove it by that story.

You're an anti-consumerist? Behold the deadly effects of consumer greed! You hate Wal-Mart? Wal-Mart kills! You think that the Christmas should be about the birth of Christ, and the meaning of His incarnation? Here's a horrid example of what happens when you substitue Mammon for Christ. You're an athiest? Look, another death linked to a religious celebration! You're a socialist? A perfect example of the inhumanity of capitalism. Hate America? Here's America at its worst. You're from a red state? Look at those selfish, heartless New Yorkers!

La Rochefoucauld: "In the misfortunes of our best friends we always find something not altogether displeasing to us."

I'm seeing the same thing we got after the Columbine shootings, the grotesque spectacle of everyone hunting beneath the dead bodies of schoolchildren trying to find support for their own cause.

Boy, people suck, don't they? And you know what? A bunch of crazed shoppers killing a store employee just proves it.
