  • Mood:

fuku(ramu), fuku(reru)

meaning: swell, expand

膨れっ面 == fukurettsura == (noun) sulky look
膨脹 == bouchou == (noun) expansion, swelling, increase, growth

Left radical is 'flesh/of the body' (肉). The right elements are a Non-General Use character meaning 'swell/drumbeat/strong'. Its left element is derived from a pictograph of a drum, and the right element is 'delicate hairs'. It is said to represent the increase in intensity of a beating drum that starts very softly/delicately. In this character it means 'swell' metaphorically, and with the left radical, means 'swollen body'. It originally referred to pregnancy, but its meanings are now more general. Henshall suggests taking the central elements as 'samurai' (士), and 'beans' (豆), and as a mnemonic: 'Samurai's body swells after eating hairy beans.'
