Bottoms, vaginas, Paris, and spam

Paris by night.

Large photo, longish dl time. Worth it.

As I warned you a year ago, the address is going away. It's become little more than a spam magnet. (I made the mistake of using it to subscribe to a mailing list that is publicly archived on the web, and scrape-able.) Any of you who need to email me probably have a current address. For the rest of you, the LJ email address on my user page works.

And now, via the OED Word o' the Day:

noun [mass noun] dated a system of merchant insurance in which a ship is used as security against a loan to finance a voyage, the lender losing their money if the ship sinks.
origin late 16th cent. : from bottom (in the sense ‘ship’) + -ry, influenced by Dutch bodemerij.

Bottoms are always funny. Especially when being discussed in hushed tones by stuffy British insurance men. I blame all that caning business at public schools.

Finally, The Hidden Threat of Vaginofascism.

You've been warned.

meaning: grieve, mourn

悼辞 == douji == (noun) funeral address, message of condolence, words of condolence
哀悼 == aitou == (noun) condolence, regret, sorrow, sympathy, lament

Left radical is a radical form of 'heart/feelings'. Right radical is 'excel/table' (卓), used phonetically to express 'sway/move'. To grieve is to have one's heart swayed. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Grieve with heart on the table.'
