I note that Jack Williamson has died. I've read little of him; most of his best-known stuff was written in and for an era before I started reading SF, although I've always meant to read "With Folded Hands..." at least. I've probably got it in an anthology around here, somewhere.

Williamson's family moved to New Mexico in 1915 in a covered wagon. Yes. Another era. He is credited with coining the terms 'genetic engineering' and 'terraforming'. The first is seeing a lot of practical use. We've got a way to go before the second finds its way into op-eds and talking-head news programs, though. Although I hope it will happen.

He was 98 years old. R.I.P., Jack.

TETSU

meaning: alternate, rotate

更迭 == koutetsu == (noun) change, shake-up, reshuffle, exchanging places

Bottom/left radical is 'movement (along a road)'. Right upper radical is 'lose' (失), which acts phonetically to express 'change'. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Alternating can involve loss of movement.'
