TEI

meaning: emperor

帝国 == teikoku == (noun) empire, imperial
皇帝 == koutei == (noun) emperor

Unclear etymology. Originally a pictograph of an altar. Current meaning may be related to the belief that the emperor was a god, or may simply be borrowed. Henshall suggests taking this character as 'stand' (立), 'broom', and as a mnemonic: 'Emperor stands over broom.'
