So cool: finding the ruins of previously unknown Roman villas using Google Earth. [shameless link to MeFi]

Look, finding Roman ruins in Tuscany is fine, but what happens when some Google monkey finally locates those pre-human ruins on the Plateau of Leng, huh? You know what we're going to find there, don't you?

Perhaps the Chicxulub meteor didn't cause the mass extinction of the dinosaurs after all. That famous meteor appears to date from half a million years before that extinction. The actual cause of the extinction is hypothesized to have been more complex, and the coup de grâce delivered by another meteor entirely, the crater of which has, um, not yet been found.1

IOW, we're still at the guessing stage as far as what causes mass extinctions.

1. Because it was an alien spaceship carrying the Great Old Ones, who ate all the dinosaurs. Even the real big ones. Get with the program, science folk.

meaning: mound, tumulus

蟻塚 == ariduka == (noun) ant hill
一里塚 == ichiriduka == (noun) milestone [one 'ri' apart]

Left radical is 'earth/ground' (土). Top right radical is 'roof/cover'. Lower right radical is 'pig', which here acts phonetically to express 'pile'. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Earthen mount covers pig.'
