shizu(maru), shizu(meru)

meaning: calm, suppress, weight

鎮圧 == chinatsu == (noun that can take する to act as a verb) suppression, subjugation
鎮守 == chinju == (noun) local Shinto deity, tutelary god

Left radical is 'metal' (金). Right radical is 'true' (真), used phonetically to express 'heavy'. This character originally referred to a heavy metal weight, which led to meanings such as 'hold down/suppress', and so forth. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Suppress with truly heavy metal weight.'
