Häagen-Dazs: 'Pineapple Coconut'
|Executive summary: I love you, I want to have your baby!|
I'm not sure why I bought this. It's not new, I've been seeing it in the freezer section for months if not years. But I'm very glad I finally discovered it. It's absolutely great. It's basically a pina colada: pineapple, coconut and rum flavors. (Why do tropical flavors blend together so well?) And that's all it is. Ingredient list: "CREAM, SKIM MILK, SUGAR, PINEAPPLE, EGG YOLKS, NATURAL COCONUT FLAVOR, NATURAL FLAVOR, RUM"
This is probably why I generally prefer Häagen-Dazs to Ben & Jerry's, and to most ice creams: there's nothing in it but ice cream stuff. B & J claims that their product is all natural, but that includes stuff like non-fat milk solids, peanut oil, canola oil, guar gum, carageenan, and, soy lecithin. All this is harmless, of course, but it doesn't improve the flavor of the ice cream, or its 'mouth feel'. Most of these ingredients are 'stabilizers', which are supposed to prevent the butterfat from separating during churning. Somehow, Häagen-Dazs doesn't need them. Nor does it need, like B & J, to add extra oils, probably so that they can get away with using less (expensive) cream.
Ben & Jerry are a lot more creative and adventurous than Häagen-Dazs, who don't introduce new flavors very often. And their ice creams are often pretty good. But my very favorites are from Häagen-Dazs. When it comes to food, you can't beat quality ingredients. Mmmm...
'Pineapple Coconut' gests a '9' on my 1-10 scale of ice cream godliness. Not quite up to Häagen-Dazs Rum Raisin, but nipping at its heels.
