And now, sassy concubines

CHAKU

meaning: legitimate heir

嫡子 == chakushi == (noun) legitimate child
嫡男== chakunan == (noun)  heir, eldest son

Left radical is 'woman' (女). Right radical is a character found only in Chinese, meaning 'base/starting point, which acts phonetically to express 'dutiful'. A 'dutiful woman' indicates a legitimate wife (as opposed to a concubine, who might not be expected to be dutiful?). In Japanese, the concept has become generalized to refer to legitimate offspring of both sexes. Henshall suggests remembering the right radical as a combination of 'emperor' (帝) and 'old' (古), and as a mnemonic: 'Old Emperor's wife produces legitimate heir.'
