meaning: fine, slender

繊細 == sensai == (noun, adjective that takes な) fine, nice, delicate, subtle
化繊 ==  kasen == (noun) synthetic fiber

Left radical is 'thread' (糸). The right radical was originally a character found only in Chinese composed of pictographs for 'leek' and 'halberd', and means a plant that thrusts up, spear-like, from the ground (like a halberd). The right radical acts phonetically to express 'fine/slender'; thus, this character originally meant 'fine thread'. Now it means 'fine/slender' in general. Henshall suggests taking the current form of the right radical as 'red' (赤), 'one' (一), and 'halberd', and as a mnemonic: 'Cut one slender red thread with halberd.'
