One of These Things Is Not Like the Others, Dept.

From the current Locus, the caption on the photo of the 2005 Nebula 'Winners, Nominees, and Others' on the TOC page:

...standing: Susan Vaught, Bradley Thompson, K.D. Wentworth, Joe Haldeman, Holly Black, Michael Cassutt, Gordon Van Gelder, Harlan Ellison®, William F. Nolan, Paolo Bacigalupi, Paul Witcover, Rich Bowes; seated:, Anne Harris, Bud Spearhawk, John C. Wright, Jack McDevitt, Margo Lanagan

Uh, this is the first I've noticed this. How long has it been going on? And how do you pronounce it?

SEKI®

o(shimu)®, o(shii)®

meaning: regret, be loath to

名残惜 == nagorioshii == (adjective) regret, reluctance
愛惜 ==  aiseki == (noun that can take する to act as a verb) missing someone, being loath to part with someone

Left radical is one of the radical forms of 'heart/feelings'.  Right radical is 'past' (昔), which here acts phonetically to express 'pierce'. A 'pierced heart' seems to be a poetic way of meaning 'regret'. Henshall® suggests as a mnemonic: 'Feelings for the past are full of regret.'
