I've noticed a pattern in patients/relatives lately. Patient: young male, 20s or 30s, shaved head, piercings, tattoos on neck. Brought to the ER by medics or police after an OD, either deliberate (suicide attempt), or accidental (recreational drug abuse). Followed by female relative: late middle-age, dowdy dress, white hair, slightly stooped posture, puzzled expression. Usually the patient's mom. Confused, hurt, but most of all, simply not understanding this strange, dreadful new place her son has wandered into. He used to be such a nice boy. What could have happened to him?

I see this pair arrive at least once a week. Out of the same family, but a universe apart.

meaning: divide, analyze

分析 == bunseki == (noun which can take する to act as a verb) analysis
精神分析 ==  seishinbunseki == (noun) psychoanalysis

Left radical is 'tree' (木). Right radical is 'axe' (斤). Thus, to chop up a tree, with the connotation of  reducing something to smaller bits, an idea associated with thought and analysis in Japanese, as in  English. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Analyze tree by chopping and dividing with axe.'
