I had no idea there were so many different kinds of vampires.

Yes, I know, the writing is dreadful and the scholarship questionable. I'm just sayin', that's an awful lot of different kinds of vampires.

meaning: shallows, rapids

浅瀬 == asase == (noun) shoal, shallows, sand bar, ford
瀬戸際 ==  setogiwa == (noun) brink, critical moment

Left radical is a radical form of 'water'. Right radical is 'rely' (頼), used phonetically to express 'fast'. Where the waters of a river flow fast is a shallows, rapids, or ford. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Rely on water having shallows.'
