SHOU

JOU

yuzu(ru)

meaning: hand over, yield

親譲り == oyayuzuri == (noun) inheritance from a parent
譲歩== jouho == (noun) concession, conciliation, compromise

Obscure etymology. Left radical is 'words/speak' (言). The right radical is a character only found in Chinese with a number of different meanings, used here in its original meaning of 'people accusing each other'. This character originally referred to individuals engaged in an argument. The origin of its present meanings is unclear; they may represent the outcome of the argument, or may simply be borrowed. Henshall suggests taking the right radical as six (六), a variant of 'well' (井), and clothing (衣), and as a mnemonic: 'Yield to words—hand over clothes and six wells.'
