SHOU

JOU

meaning: superfluous

冗長 == jouchou == (noun, adjective that takes な) tedious, verbose, redundancy
冗言 == jougen == (noun) chatter, useless words

The upper element is derived from the pictograph of a house. The lower element is 'crouching person', probably a cripple. This character originally referred a person who was 'superfluous' because he did not work. In Chinese it still can mean 'tramp/vagrant'. Now it means 'superfluous' in a more general sense. Henshall suggests taking the bottom elements as a 'table', and the top as a 'cover', and as a mnemonic: 'Cover up superfluous table.'
