SHOU

JOU

take

meaning: length, stature, measure

大丈夫 == daijoubu == (noun, adjective that takes な, adverb) safe, all right, O.K.
気丈 == kijou == (noun, adjective that takes な) stout-hearted, firm

Originally the 'hand' radical, and 'ten' (十). One hand breadth was 1 shaku, a measure of length. Ten shaku equaled 1 jou, or about ten feet. Now this character means 'size/length' in a more general sense. Henshall suggests taking it as the 'hand with stick/coercion' radical, and as a mnemonic: 'Hand holds stick ten feet in length.'
