SHOU

SHOU

ko(geru), ko(gasu), a(seru), ji(reru)

meaning: scorch, fret

焦慮 == shouryo == (noun) impatience, worry
黒焦げ == kurokoge == (noun) something burnt black

Top radical is 'bird', bottom radical is 'fire': thus, a bird roasting on a fire. This character came to have meanings of 'scorch' and 'char', and now also means 'fret'. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Bird frets when scorched over fire.'
