I've received the March issue of F&SF, and whaddya know, there are stories by both Clarion homie burnt_njal ("From the Mouths of Babes") and Ef Deal, who's in my local crit group ("Czesko").

Damn good stories, too.

Tangent review agrees they're great stories.

Yay, both of you!

meaning: juku, private school

塾生 == jukusei == (noun) private school student
学習塾 == gakushuujuku == (noun) private night-school, tutoring school

Originally a pictograph of a person building castle walls out of 'earth' (土). This character originally meant 'walled settlement', later 'walled compound', and eventually 'school'. In Japan, it has come to mean specifically an after-hours cram school. Henshall suggests taking the upper left elements as 'child' (子), with a 'mouth' (口) and 'top hat', the top right radical as 'round' (丸), and as a mnemonic: 'Earthy private school for round-mouthed top-hatted children.'
