  • Mood:

SHUKU

meaning: solemn, quiet

静粛 == seishuku == (adjective that takes な, noun) silent
自粛 == jishuku == (noun which can take する to act as a verb) self-control, self-discipline

The top radical is a variant of 'hand holding brush', which acts phonetically to express 'dark'. The bottom elements were originally a pictograph of a 'deep pool'. From 'deep dark pool' came ideas of 'quiet'; solemn is an associated meaning. Henshall suggests taking the bottom elements as 'rice' (米), in an 'open container' (the surrounding vertical lines', and the top elements as 'hand holding stick to pound', and and as a mnemonic: 'Hand solemnly pounds rice in open containers.'
