SHAKU

meaning: peerage

男爵 == danshaku == (noun) baron
公爵 == koushaku == (noun) prince, duke

'Somewhat confused' evolution of meaning. It is composed of one of the radical versions of 'hand' (top radical), 'dish/bowl' (皿), radical version of 'food/eat' (食, bottom left), and 'measure/hand' (寸). It is not clear how these came to mean 'peerage'. There is some thought that in ancient China, at the time the character developed, a particular type of vessel was a symbol of high rank. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Peer's hands clutch food bowl.'
