JI

itsuku(shimu)
meaning: love, pity, affection

慈恵 == jikei == (noun) mercy and love
慈悲 == jihi== (noun) compassion, benevolence, charity, mercy

Bottom radical is 'heart/feelings' (心). Top radical is an element meaning 'twisted threads', here used phonetically to express 'rear/raise'. This character originally referred to parental love in rearing a child, and still means that in Chinese. In Japanese its meanings have broadened to encompass a more general idea of love, affection, and pity. Henshall suggests remembering the right radical as a 'double' version of 'short thread' (an abbreviation of 'thread' (糸), and as a mnemonic: 'Double threads of love and pity in heart.'
