SHI

samurai, habe(ru)
meaning: attend (upon)

侍医 == jii == (noun) court physician
侍者 == jisha == (noun) attendant, valet, altar boy

Left radical is 'person' (人). Right radical is 'temple' (寺), which acts phonetically to express 'serve', and also means 'clerical'. Thus, 'person serving in a clerical capacity'. Eventually this character came to mean 'servant/attendant' in a more general sense, including 'samurai'. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Person in attendance at temple is samurai.'
