|Right radical is the radical form of 'sword/cut'. Left radical is a Non-General Use character meaning 'thorn', used to here to mean 'sharp/piercing'. This character originally meant 'stab with a sword'; now it means 'pierce' more generally, and also 'cut/slice', as in 'sashimi' (刺身). Henshall suggests taking the left radical as a 'tree' (木) with 'droopy branches', and as a mnemonic: 'Cut piercing thorns from droopy-branched tree.'|
