  • Mood:

mugo(i), miji(me)
meaning: cruel, miserable

惨事 == sanji == (noun) disaster, horrible accident
惨敗 == zanbai == (noun which can take する to act as a verb) ignominious defeat, crushing failure, utterly beaten, overwhelming defeat

Left radical is one of the radical forms of 'heart/feelings'. Right radical is 'attend/go' (参), here acting phonetically to express 'needle/pierce' (it originally referred to a woman with ostentatious hairpins). 'Piercing the heart' was a way of saying 'torment'. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Cruelty attended by feelings of misery.'
