SAKU

meaning: rope, search

探索 == tansaku == (noun which can take する to act as a verb) search
思索 == shisaku == (noun) speculation, thinking, meditation

Bottom radical is 'thread' (糸). Originally this character was a pictograph of hands plaiting thread into rope. 'Search' is a borrowed meaning. Henshall suggests taking the top  radical as a 'church roof' (i.e., a roof with a cross on it), and as a mnemonic: 'Search for rope: find thread under church roof.'
