Tom Gally's series photographs of curious things in Yokohama

Outside staircases. Doors. Stacks of stuff. People sleeping outside. And more. Mainly in Yokohama. Evocative and enigmatic photographs by Tom Gally.

I especially love the staircases. Is there anything more eerie, mysterious, threatening, and inviting than a crumbling, shadowy stone staircase? Mmmm, staircases.

I feel the same way about corners.

KOU

meaning: ferment, yeast

発酵 == hakkou == (noun which can take する to act as a verb) fermentation
酵母 == kouba ==  (noun) yeast, leaven

Left radical is 'wine jar', used here to mean 'alcohol' . Right radical is 'filial piety' (孝), which acts phonetically to express 'yeast'. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Filial piety is a jar of fermented alcohol.'
