ara(i), a(reru), a(rasu)
meaning: rough, wild, waste

荒野 == areno == (noun) wasteland, wilderness, deserted land, prairie, vast plain, wilds, desert
荒仕事 == arashigoto ==  (noun) rough work, hard work

Top radical is 'grass'. Bottom radical is a character found only in Chinese meaning 'vast watery waste', composed of 'river' (川) and 'death' (亡), which acts phonetically to express 'vast'. This character originally meant 'grassy waste', i.e., abandoned land. This led to meanings such as 'uncared for', 'rough', 'wild', etc. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'River and dead grass in wild wasteland.'
