KOU, KAN

koura
meaning: shell, armor, high, 1st, A

生き甲斐 == ikigai == (noun) something one lives for, something very important
甲種 == koushu==  (noun) Grade A, first class

Originally a pictograph of a hard-shelled seed with crossing splits in its shell. The bottom vertical line represents a sprout (or root?). Eventually this character came to be associated with shell-like things, rather than with the seed itself. The meanings of '1st' and 'high' are borrowed. Henshall suggests taking this character a combination of 'field' (田) and the figure '1', and as a mnemonic: 'An 'A 1' field.'
