I notice that The Latest Dark Cabal, having made a bit of a splash two months ago, hasn't posted anything new for a month and a half. It looks like it's dead, Jim.

That's a shame. TLDC had barely gotten up to speed, and had posted some worthwhile stuff, although nothing worldshaking. I blame their demise on being shamed into outing themselves and their identities.

Anonymity on the net isn't always a great thing, cf. John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory.  But sometimes it is. Sometimes the 'excommunicating voice of society' can inhibit the free expression of honest, but unpopular or threatening opinion. I don't know whether TLDC would have generated new, interesting ideas, or felt free to have a whack at some windmills and expose some clothes-less emperors. But it looks like it isn't going to happen now.

Happy birthday to Strange Horizons, which is five years old today!

GEN

maboroshi
meaning: illusion?

夢幻 == mugen == (noun) dreams, fantasy, visions
幻滅 == genmetsu ==  (noun) disillusionment

Confused and unhelpful etymology. Originally an inversion of the pictograph for 'weaving shuttle', it became confused with the character for 'short thread' (similar to 糸). Its present meanings are borrowed, and may result partly from confusion with the character for 'occult' (玄). Henshall suggests taking the right radical as a 'hook', and as a mnemonic: 'Short thread becomes hook? A magical illusion.'
