Tomorrow, early, I will be leaving for the Writers of the Future conference/workshop/awards ceremony in Seattle. I'll probably update LJ while I'm there—the hotel's website says there's free high-speed access from every room—but there won't be any more kanji until Sunday, 8/14 at the earliest.
節倹== sekken == (noun) economy, thrift
|Left radical is 'person' (人). Right radical is a character found only in Chinese, here used phonetically to express 'few'. The concept of a person with few possessions gave rise to this character's current meanings. Henshall suggests taking the bottom elements of the right radical as a variant of 'elder brother' (兄), the top elements as a 'cap', and as a mnemonic: 'Elder brother wears only a cap -- thrifty person.'|
