KYUU

ku(chiru)
meaning: decay, rot

老朽 == roukyuu == (noun) superannuated, decrepitude
不朽 == fukyuu == (noun, adjective which takes の) everlasting, immortal, eternal, immortality, imperishable

Left radical is 'tree' (木). The right radical is 'seek an exit/twisting waterweed', which acts phonetically to express 'rot'. Thus, this character originally meant 'rotting wood'; now it means 'rot' in a more general sense. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Twisting weed on rotting tree.'
