KYAKU

kae(tte)
meaning: (on the) contrary

却下 == kyakka == (noun which can take する to act as a verb) rejection, dismissal
忘却 == boukyaku == (noun) lapse of memory, forgetfulness, oblivion

Left radical is 'go/leave' (去). Right radical is 'bending person'. A 'bending person leaving' is a reference to leaving the presence of  superior on one's knees, a sign of respect. How this character came to its present meaning is controversial. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Leave on bended knees, just to be contrary.'
