KI

su(teru)
meaning: abandon, renounce

廃棄物 == haikibutsu == (noun) waste matter, waste, garbage, trash
自棄 == yake (also pronounced: jiki) == (noun) despair, desperation, abandonment

Originally a pictograph of two hands throwing away a child (!). Damn, but life in ancient China was tough. But the Romans abandoned unwanted children to die of exposure too, didn't they? Ahem, back on topic: Henshall suggests remembering this character by association with 'leaf' (葉), and as a mnemonic: 'Abandon child, tossing away like leaf.'
