Robert Sheckley is hospitalized in Kiev, on the vent. Doctors describe his condition as 'grave'.

The news story says he was a star of the 'Golden Age' of sf, but I think this is wrong: his work seems to date from the 1950's and later. Sheckley's work used to turn up in 'Best of' type anthos of science fiction and horror when I was growing up. He did some wonderful stuff, especially short stories. As his bibliography shows, he was anthologized a lot. Five of his stories are in the 'Classics' section of SCIFICTION.

I hope he pulls through; but a guy in his 70's in respiratory failure has a poor outlook.

meaning: ring, circle

循環 == junkan == (noun) circulation, rotation, cycle
環礁 == kanshou == (noun) atoll, circular coral reef

Left radical is the radical form of 'jewel' (玉), right radical is a character only found in Chinese, meaning 'gaze in terror'; here it is used phonetically to express 'fit'. The original meaning of this character was 'jeweled ring/bracelet', and later came to mean 'ring/circle' more generally. Henshall suggests taking the right radical in its literal meaning of 'sorrowful', and as a mnemonic: 'Jeweled ring evokes sorrowful look.'
