  • Mood:

meaning: calamity

戦禍 == senka == (noun) war damages, ravages of war
舌禍 == zekka == (noun, adjective that takes な) slip of the tongue

Left radical is 'altar/of the gods'. Right radical is 'backbone', which acts phonetically to express 'rebuke'. A calamity is a 'rebuke from the gods'. Henshall suggests taking the right radical by association with 'pass' (過), as 'almost pass', and as a mnemonic:  'Almost pass altar -- could have brought calamity.'
