YOKU
ho(shii)
meaning: greed, desire

貪欲 == donyoku == (noun which can take な to act as an adjective) avarice, greed, covetousness
欲求 == yokkyuu == (noun) desire

Right radical is 'lack' (欠), used in its literal sense of 'person with gaping mouth'. Left radical is 'valley' (谷), used phonetically to express 'continuous'. Thus, 'person with continuously gaping mouth', indicating greedy desire for food; later, came to mean both 'greed' and 'desire' in general. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Greedy person lacks valley so desires one.'
