Interesting blog post from Carl Zimmer on some research on guppies that suggests that higher intelligence develops under less stressful living conditions. This is counter-intuitive to me: wouldn't higher intelligence help a creature survive predators and other environmental dangers? Apparently not. Were humans able to develop intelligence to begin with because East Africa was Eden-like a couple of million years ago?
