Interesting blog post from Carl Zimmer on some research on guppies that suggests that higher intelligence develops under less stressful living conditions. This is counter-intuitive to me: wouldn't higher intelligence help a creature survive predators and other environmental dangers? Apparently not. Were humans able to develop intelligence to begin with because East Africa was Eden-like a couple of million years ago?

MEI

meaning: alliance, pledge

連盟 == renmei == (noun) federation, league, union, alliance
加盟 == kamei == (noun) participation, affiliation

The bottom radical is derived from pictographs meaning both 'bowl' (皿) and 'blood' (血).Top radical was originally a pictograph of a mouth. This character meant 'to drink blood from a bowl', indicating a pledge of fealty. Eww. The top radical is now 'bright' (明). Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Bright alliance pledged over bowl of blood.'
