Life in China. These photographs have been widely linked around the net in the past day, but if you haven't seen them yet, here they are. Interesting for their subject matter, but also admirable as photographs, for their composition and other photographic values.

na(i), na(kunaru)
meaning: die, escape, lose

亡骸 == nakigara == (noun) corpse
亡命 == boumei == (noun which takes suru to act as a verb) emigration, exile, flight from one's country, defection

This character originally depicted a person hiding in a corner. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Dead person lost in corner.' Sounds like something from an Edward Gorey book, doesn't it? "Oh, where can Mr. Edwin Featherbush-Heathwoodstone be? We can't find him." (Family looking all over the house, while Edwin F-H's corpse quietly rots in a corner.) Excuse me, I've just got some flight of ideas here.
