chance88088 tells me that my story "Clockwork Dragons Must Die!", recently published by the Fortean Bureau, has received a recommendation for the Nebula Award.

It needs ten recommendations just to get on the preliminary ballot, so it's a looooong way from a Nebula, but still—this is a very nice thing.

ita(i), ita(mu), ita(meru),
meaning: pain, painful

痛ましい == itamashii == (adjective) pitiful, heartbreaking
痛烈 == tsuuretsu == (adjective-like noun, takes な) severe, bitter, scathing

Upper/left radical is 'sickness'. Lower/right radical is a character only found in Chinese used phonetically to express 'penetrate/pass through'. Henshall suggests remembering the lower/right radical by association with 'pass through' (通), and as a mnemonic: 'Pain passes through sick body.'
