It is now clear that both Bush and Kerry, contenders for the throne, have been granted special powers by the Almighty.

Bush casts out demons from a young witch.

The Ecstasy of St. Kerry: "Beside me on the left appeared a Kennedy in bodily form . . . In his hands I saw a football. This he passed into my hands several times so that it penetrated my polls . . . and left me utterly consumed by the great love of the voters."

SOU

meaning: stratum, layer

下層 == kasou == lower classes
高層ビル == kousoubiru == skyscraper

Top/left radical is now 'corpse', but was originally a version of 'building' (屋). The lower/right radical is part of 'build up' (増). This character, therefore, meant 'built up building', i.e., with more than one story. It ultimately came to mean 'story' in general, and layers of other kinds. Henshall suggests taking the right/lower radical as 'eight' (八), 'field' (田), and 'day' (日), and as a mnemonic: 'Layers of corpses build up in field over eight days.'
