  • Mood:

mu(su), mu(reru)
meaning: steam

蒸気 == jouki == steam
蒸留水 == jouryuusui == distilled water

Top radical is 'grass/plants'. Bottom radical is the radical form of fire. The middle portion was originally a pictograph of hands. This character originally depicted hands throwing brushwood on a fire. How it came to mean 'steam' is unclear. Henshall suggests taking the middle portion as a combination of 'water' (水) and 'baby' (子), with the bottom stroke as a 'hotplate', and as a mnemonic: 'Grass covered waterbaby steams on fiery hotplate.'
