webpetals, one of my Clarion posse, just received the cover proofs for her first novel, Tiger Eye. Take a look at them here. Go Marjorie!

wara(u), e(mu)
meaning: laugh, smile

苦笑 == kushou == (noun that takes suru to act as a verb) wry smile, bitter smile
笑い声 == waraigoe == laughter

Confused etymology. Top radical is 'bamboo' (竹). Henshall suggests taking the bottom radical as a 'big person' (大) with top stroke indicating a bent head, and as a mnemonic: 'Big person bent over like bamboo, laughing.'
