KOU, KU
kurenai, beni
meaning: red, crimson, rouge

紅葉 == kouyou == red leaves
紅茶 == koucha == brown tea

Left radical is 'thread' (糸), right radical is 'work' (工), which acts phonetically to express 'pink'. This character originally referred to red or pink fabric; now it means red color in general. As with the English word 'rouge', it is also used to refer to cosmetics. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Work with crimson threads.
