春巻き == harumaki == spring roll
巻き物 == makimono == scroll

The top portion was originally a pictograph of 'hands rolling rice'. The bottom portion is derived from a pictograph of a 'curled/bent body'. Thus, this character meant 'roll/curl', leading to meanings relating to scrolls, and when books replaced scrolls, 'volume'. Henshall suggests taking the top portion as 'two' (二) fires (火), the bottom radical as 'self' (己), and as a mnemonic: 'Light two fires by oneself with rolled volumes.'
