Every once in a while you run across a quote that sounds good, but on close examination, turns out to be complete bullshit. I think this is one of them. The line Tolkien gives Gandalf, that "he who breaks a thing to find out what it is, has left the path of wisdom," is another. So is David Mamet's "Those with 'something to fall back on' invariably fall back on it. They intended to all along. That is why they provided themselves with it."
All true knowledge contradicts common sense.
—Mandell Creighton (1843-1901)
Smart men. Appealing quotes. Really dumb ideas.
