WotF likes me

Writers of the Future picked my short story, "In the Flue," as its first place finisher in the second quarter of 2004. This is my first pro sale.

For those of you unfamiliar with WotF: it's a spec-fic writing contest for beginning writers. Winners get published in a yearly volume. Prizes are substantial. WotF is well-known, and gets up to 1800 submissions per quarter.

Yay!

EN
so(u)
meaning: go alongside

海沿い == umizoi == coastlands
沿路 == enro == route

Left radical is the radical form of 'water', right radical is a character only found in Chinese that originally meant 'hollowed out', here acting phonetically to express 'follow'. Thus, follow water/river, leading to the meanings of this character relating coasts, and to larger meanings such as 'route'. Henshall suggests taking the right radical as 'opening' (口) and 'eight' (八), and as a mnemonic: 'Go alongside of water, through eight openings.'
