Originally a pictograph of a roof (top radical) supported by roof beams, lending the idea of a large, 'ample' space. Henshall suggests remembering the top part as a roof, and the rest as 'dry' (干) and 'eight' (八), and as a mnemonic: 'Eight excessively dry beams under ample roof.'
