TOU
su(beru)
meaning: supervise, lineage

伝統 == dentou == tradition
統計 == toukei == statistics

Left radical is 'thread' (糸). Right radical is 'full' (充), acting phonetically to express 'beginning'. Thus, this character originally meant, 'beginning of a thread. Eventually it came to mean 'a thread from end to end', and thus led to the idea of lineage. Henshall suggests as a mnemonic: 'Supervise lineage full of threads.'
