CHIKU
kizu(ku)
meaning: build

建築 == kenchiku == building
修築 == shuuchiku == repair, renovation, restoration

Bottom radical is 'tree/wood' (木). The top part is a character found only in Chinese meaning 'percussion instrument'. It is composed of 'bamboo' (竹), and a pictograph of a hand holding a plectrum and of the instrument itself. This character acts phonetically to express 'pound'. This character originally referred to a stamper used to tamp down earth as part of building construction. Its current meanings involve the act of building, and buildings themselves, in general. Henshall suggests taking the lower left part of the top radical as 'work' (工), and 'mediocre' (凡), and and as a mnemonic: 'Mediocre work with wood and bamboo in building.'
